The "firm" / "those in grey suits i.e the traditionalists decided they did not approve of harry marrying a divorced American woman and it was a risk to the monarchy with her having all of these "modern" ideas. Therefore they decided early on to keep her at arms reach until such time they had brainwashed her into royal precedent and permanently indoctrinating her into the family to tow the line.

Unfortunately from the off, harry clearly had not fully explained the sacrifice of being part of the royal family or she had not understood the rules and convention and did not realise that she could not speak about issues important to her as they were not part of the "official" royal position.

Overall its a classic "didn't know what I was getting myself in to".

Albeit the royal family could of supported her more during the constant tabloid barrage. Perhaps even release a statement condemning the news articles
