Charging the battery is the same

It's still a 5v socket, it's just that when you shift data either way, you will only do so at ~12Mbits/s (USB 1), rather than up to 480Mbits/s (USB 2).

In an ideal world (i.e. after you win lotto), buy a new computer and a real MP3 player. As it is, keep what you've got as it doesn't make any real difference (Unless you regularly change the entire 20GB contents of your IPod.
