Are to prevent a single activity filling your card. Lots of security cams also have timeout function, i.e. won't restart recording the same incident, in case it is a branch waving in front of your camera.
If you are looking for a wildlife cam to strap to a tree in your garden, google top ten lists and cross reference to see which appear in all the lists. That way you filter out sponsored entries.
I looked at such items a couple of months back coz we have deer and birds of prey in our garden and there are plenty of choices around the 40-50 quid mark.
One feature I read about was making sure the ir sensor or camera activation (cant remember which) doesn't disturb the animals. That might be worth investigating.
