I always wondered why no one made a film of the Gran Sasso raid

where a crack German team of paratroopers led by Otto Skorzney (sp) freed Mussolini from the Gran Sasso mountain in Italy after he was captured by the Allies.

Funnily enough I'm pretty sure I read this was partly funded with fake money produced under Operation Bernhard, which some of you might recall was the theme of a quite excellent book called Private Schulz and also a TV series starring Michael Elphick.

If you don't know, the Germans rounded up lots of the best forgers they could find, some from concentration camps, and put them to work producing British five pound notes to fund the war effort.

Imagine that though, capture the dictator of one of the axis powers and then let him be rescued ffs
