Say you bought an expensive item on the internet from a private seller

and they wanted a fairly hefty deposit up front (its waaaay up north so I can't just nip up and check it out) is PayPal the best method as the seller has asked for z bank transfer but i am wary if cabbying all the way up there to find out the person or item doesn't exist and neither does my deposit. I do realise I can negotiate the deposit down but thats not my point. Asking for myself.
