Trouble is...
Three of last years back four last year were always going to start because they were our three hottest prospects, the "jewels in the crown" Realistically improving our defence was going to involve either: 1) the three CB formation that had massively improved the defence the season before promotion and worked so well against Arsenal & Chelsea in the cup or 2) changing our style of play passing out from the back. I suspect players who are both brilliant defenders and technically excellent passers were out of our price range. I thought we'd see three CBs used often this season but sadly it has rarely been possible and in the event I don't think we've tried it once? The defence actually has more excuses for being bad this season, given all the injuries and that our style of play exposes them a lot. It is the failure of virtually all of the creative attacking players who got us promoted to step up to this level that has doomed us.
