I was tempted to go round to the signing and say that he had succeeded.

Probably the most elegant player I have ever seen live and while he and Gordon Greenidge rarely came off in the same innings, it was a wonderful combination to watch - I'm not sure there has ever been better in the Championship. For Richards it seemed effortless, while Greenidge had great power. Great pair of catchers too, took a huge number of some very ordinary bowlers in the 73 championship winning season.

Once when I was about 12 during a rain affected match a bunch of kids were hanging around outside the office at Northlands Road looking for autographs. He went in, saying he was busy now, come back at 5 (3 or 4 hours later). Several of us did and he turned up and signed.

I don't have a single favourite, more of a top several, all 3 mentioned here are in it.
