Given he has surely enjoyed a privileged upbringing, being the son of a premier league football player, I'm sure his robbing was all about exerting power over his victims rather than out of a need for money.

This points to some pretty grim character flaws. As you say, hopefully he can turn himself around, I wouldn't bet on it though.
