I was thinking about this from the other way round

Say we were in the championship and in third place - same points distant as we are from safety and same number of games remaining. Would we have decided that there is no chance of automatic, or similarly if we were in seventh, that there’d be no chance of reaching the playoffs? I don’t think so.
