Sounds a bit of a case.

I retired from the forces at 40, after 23 years. Commuted half my pension as a lump sum, and it was restored at age 55 to 100% level (about £900 a month). The pension makes up a little for 24/7 availability, postings to god forsaken places where your wife and kids can't go, things like that.
