depends on where you will be driving

diesel is worse for immediate air quality and filters get clogged with lots of slow driving - so they are a terrible choice if you drive mostly in cities. But they are more efficient and produce less co2 emissions, so are cheaper to run and better for environment if you drive mostly >55mph.

Electric is great as a second car for short trips, or if you will only drive very locally. Otherwise it's no good. Also, electric technology is moving much faster than petrol/diesel, so there is a good chance the car value could drop massively in the near future, as new technology makes older models obsolete.

Petrol only really the best choice (in running costs and environmentally) if you drive mostly in cities, but want the option of doing longer journeys every now and again.
