The decent thing for Leavers to do, after the referendum, would have been to say: we won, but pretty narrowly; so the shape of Brexit should probably reflect that.
The decent thing for Remainers to do, after the referendum, would have been to say: close but we lost; so no talk of a second referendum, accept the decision and help shape a Brexit which works best.
Neither side did the decent thing, of course. It's Yet Another Example of how the middle ground doesn't really exist any more, and it's the most distressing aspect of our national life for me.
