One type of local sports journo is the fearless investigator, on the outside, incorruptible, seeking out stories. Doesn't get much copy, therefore.
Other type of local sports journo is on the inside, gets useful access to the players and the staff, means he can write something every day, but means it inevitably is a bit bland.
Very difficult for one paper to have both types of journo writing about one team, because the "scoop" stories produced by Type A will piss the club off and they'll then withdraw the favours enjoyed by Type B.
So the local rag has to make a choice, and since what most of them want is to have regular daily copy about the local team, guaranteed, they usually go with a Type B reporter.
It's the pressure of having to have something about the local team to fill the sports section every day. Not surprising really.
