6 years old doesn’t sound very old for this kind of failure

Have a look on a ford forum (I’m sure they exist). See if this is a known issue and if it is something that ford potentially contribute towards fixing.

If it were say four years old with a full ford service history you’d be in with a good chance of ford subsidising the cost of repair, not so sure when 6 years old and 97k on the clock, but worth investigating.
