now I don't credit managers with having anywhere near as much influence over how a team performs as I would credit an artist with a brush
They're more like jockeys to me in that respect.
However good the jockey is, you're still reliant on a horse which has an ability & mind of its own.
A good jockey can only do so much with a naff horse, and a good horse will hide many sins.
