FAO Cardiff Canary RE: REM and Bill Berry
I was lucky enough to see REM post-Bill Berry but before 'Around the Sun'. A dreadful album, the first of theirs I truly disliked (personally, I was never a fan of 'Out of Time' but it has some great songs on it) but I think it's more to do with a more recent lack of creativity and inspiration in general. 'Accelerate' was the sound of a band trying to replicate their earlier days for the first time in their career, which was a shame as I always felt they were best when doing something completely different - following 'Automatic for the People' with 'Monster' for example. 'Accelerate' sounded good but it's not a patch on 'Document'. I should give it more of a listen.
It was years before I finally listed to 'Collapse Into Now' for the first time and I actually really enjoyed a lot of it.
I'm sure the band were better on the whole with Berry but I'd rather see him happily driving his tractor on his farm than having another brain aneurism on stage.
