I was talking to my brother about this

My Uncle was too young to be required to be air crew. But he did anyway and died at 19.
My Great Uncle was too young to go to France, but somehow did anyway and died, aged 18, at Hill 60.
His younger brother - my grandfather - went to France as soon as he could and was seriously wounded twice.

WTF were they thinking about?

Wonder if they'd have gone if they'd known it was to defend this:
