This team wouldn't have done any better than any of the previous World Cup 'failures'
Would they have beaten:
2014: Italy/Uruguay - No
2010: Germany - No
2006: Portugal - No
2002 - Brazil - No
1998 - Argentina - No
1994 - Holland (qualifying group) - No
Nothing has really changed, except the team/manager seem more likeable (i.e. not such big stars) and we got a lucky draw.
Except that this bunch are a bit younger and therefore can hopefully learn from the experience and improve going forward. If they do this has indeed been a good tournament, but if they don't it's frankly been just another in a line of demonstrations that we're not good enough.
Time, as always, will tell...
