firstly, morale goes up when you are winning games. Secondly, you can say "well, you can piss around in traning too as long as you produce the goods on the pitch". Don't see how the morale of players like Helveg and Safri has been helped by seeing themselves left on the bench in favour of clearly inferior players (Worthy has even hinted at such unrest in interviews). The only way to be fair is to pick players on performance merit - that way no-one can complain.
