I need to understand more about how this borussia Dortmund II thing works

Do the first team put lads down into II to regain match fitness during the season as and when required or do the second team have a set squad and go with that all year?

Maybe Farke could set up his teams and know he'd have some s**t hot forward to bang in for 3 games on the way back from injury and let them just cream the opponent's due to just bring massively better. I'm sure he was playing some 26 year old African international in what is supposedly an U23 league. I don't know.
