well

a water softener professionally installed will not "soften" your kitchen supply just the rest of the house. have you got a little tap next to the main tap in your kitchen? If you have that's your drinking water. It should have a filter fitted in the pipework under the sink that should be changed every 3-6 months. If you live in a hard water area then the rest of the domestic cold water supply should run through a water softener to prevent your CH pipes scaling up and your washing machine and the water pipes and taps. a brita water filter does the same thing as the the drinking water tap so if you haven't got one then use the water filter as that will purify the water but it won't soften it so your kettle will still scale up over time.

I think that's how it should work but I'm not an expurt.
