but given, in the majority of cases, we bought promise rather than ready made title winners, you would presume that these players can only improve.

There is a world of difference between buying Franke/Zimmerman - who are young and learning than, say, Hooiveld and Cuellar (remember them?) who most ceretainly weren't.
