The Trastavere area is slightly cheaper and a little more Italian authentic. Pompeii is possibly too far for a comfortable day trip and in addition it is considerably closer to Naples and the Sorrento / Amalfi coast. If you plan on going in that direction then Herculaneum (also near Naples) is as good if not better than Pompeii. And then there is Vesuvius....Separate trip needed maybe to that area? Everything else has been thoroughly covered by others but would just add the (sadly) blatantly obvious to keep a very careful eye on your valuables and if possible don't keep them all in one place. Also watch out for football fans crowding round especially if Lazio are at home. Quite a lot of Ultra's.
