There is an argument to say that....
whilst she was still having to look after the child and having (presumably) had to break her career to raise that child maintenance payments are justified until such time as she's been able to re-train or get back into her previous career but as you say given the son is now 23 (so presumably not even having to be supported at Uni) she's had plenty of time to do that so I agree the decision seems somewhat unfair.
