If he hadnt, he would have spent his whole life wondering "what if" particularly if the club had, by some fluke, enjoyed the same trajectory that it eventually did.
I also reckon he probably still believes he would have got us promoted. Most successful sportsmen, certainly those that hit the levels he did, have an unwaivering self belief.
It makes me a bit sad that a lot of the younger, (probably anyone under 30?) will know him far better as the manager than the player.
