Certainly when the ball was on the ground anyway when he played more like a sweeper.

I think the jury is still out really isn't it. He was thrown in at premier league level behind a dreadful defence and its hard really to judge whether we let goals in when he played because of him or because of the defence. I certainly don't think he looked markedly worse than either of the other two have at times over the last two seasons and he's now had most of another full season in league 1 to toughen up so I can see why they think he's worth keeping on for another year!
