they don't need to play for 'a guy'

They are supposed (and are being paid) to be playing for the club, not an individual, and their own professional pride (you would like to think).

At this point it is quite clear that everybody at the club (including players and fans) just cannot wait for the season to end, and that is hardly the recipe for good focused performances.
