and the IRA turned to diplomacy because they couldn't recruit enough members and were on the road to being snuffed out. Same thing happened with ETA in Spain once France started to go after them, they had pretty much no option but to get round the table.

Not sure it tooks guts, more self-preservation of power. Although, certianly the situation benefited from the conflict not dragging on for another 10 or so years.
