It works by shaving 1mm or so off the grass only, but cutting every day. So the little shavings drop onto the lawn and mulch it. Because of the mulching (plus the fact that the grass stays at effectively a constant height, instead of the long/short/long/short cycle you get with normal mowing), the west lawn (the one the current robot mows) stayed in magnificent shape all through the dry spell last summer. My lawn guy said it was in the best shape of any lawn he treats anywhere!
