Everyone has a series of fitness thresholds and the fitter you

are the higher these thresholds are. The mistake you're making is pacing yourself to run a mile but only a mile. We can all do that. Ive completed several marathon's, triathlons etc. and even though I think I'm reasonably fit, I too could easily be knackered at the end of a mile, it's just that I'd probably run it quicker than you. As others have said down the board, you need to ease back on the pace and if that pace means a very slow jog then that's what you do. That way you'll be able to build up extra miles. That said, once you get a bit fitter, don't overlook the fact that exerting yourself hard over a shorter distance is good for improving speed over longer distances.
