We lost one of ours a number of weeks ago

Same situation, hit by a car. Bless him, the guy who found her took her to his home and came back knocking door to door until he found us.
Got her to the vets, they operated and all looked promising but got a call at 5am saying something happened in the night and she passed away. Was gutting as was expecting her home in a day or two and none of us was with her.

Eleven year old daughter absolutely distraught but actually very quickly came to terms with it. We decided to get a kitten as we've always been a two cat family and the one left behind was pretty lost as the only one. She's now firmly settled in, both cats content and happy. So that would be my advice, go out and give a great home again to one that needs one.
