what I meant was people should not be punished for actions that were not unlawful at the time they undertook them and legislation having retrospective effect should be exceptional because it contravenes that principle.
Obviously all findings of unlawful conduct by the courts are retrospective to a degree because they all, by definition, happen after the event!
