wasn't that supposed to be what was diferent this time?
all the prima donnas from the 'golden generation' gone, and the new hungry, younger players forcing their way into the team.
My theory if England really want to maximise their chance of winning anything, is to always play like one of the smaller nations. Instead of acting like Gemany or Spain and trying to always play on the front foot and take the game to the opposition, they should set up very defensively and solidly, giving up possession and looking to play on the counter. It would result in some uninspiring games where other teams also sit back, but they would be really hard to beat and their strengths are pace and physicality not technical skill, and that is best used playing on the break. Would take a huge personality to do that though - probably someone like Mourinho - otherwise the media would crucify them.
