agree, it's not an absolutely massive difference

but it is a difference nonetheless. If they would have won the group the hardest teams they could potentially face before the semi finals would be Portugal or Belgium. I'd probably make England slight favourites against both of those.

Now they would have to play France in the QF, where they are certainly underdogs.
