I do think though the staggered payments is a bit of a red herring

That should not be an obstacle to us signing players and given McNally was supposedly trying to sign European centre backs for big money right up to the deadline it presumably wasn't as otherwise he would have been wasting his time.

The problem appears to have been more that we did not already have deals lined up/progressed at the start of the summer as we had no recruitment team so we ended up scrambling around for these players at the end of the window and then when they turned us down we had no other options.
