Is there a Tree Protection Order on them?
If not you're fine to get rid. Hire someone to do it unless you really know what you're doing. Take branches first then the trunk. Either dig the stumps out - for which you probably need some kit like a digger - or cross cut them and put stump rot in there to kill the tree (otherwise it will simply grow again out of the old stump, and look mighty odd).
