and concluded that you're right, any large crowd trying to get into a massive football match would have pushed and shoved and been anxious to get inside just before kick off.

The fact so many turned up at once is irrelevant really. It was up to the police and ground to know how to handle it - that they didn't was what directly led to the 96 deaths.
