that naive initial approach is arguably the main reason we are in this sh*t

The pre-Xmas fixtures (lots of winnable home games)were really kind to us and we blew them by being suckered. Those tactics proved quite incapable of beating anyone whose defenders didn't turn up in a clown car (the shambolic early weeks Advocaat-led Sunderland and Bournemouth, whose kamikaze high defensive line here was the most gormless tactical thing I've seen all season).
Teams who stayed remotely organised (Palace, Leicester, Baggies) and just sat back and played on the counter picked us off here in games we really needed have been able to get something from. That's why playing those tactics on Saturday wouldn't have made tactical sense because we knew Sunderland would try to play just like those teams.
