I think in Trump's head he feels he's got nothing to lose. If he got in he could

cause havoc or do what he wants

If he doesn't he'll just say "I could have made America great again, but the people didn't want it"

And/or, he'll just say that the publicity has made him more money for his businesses than ever before

I think that's why he can peddle the media every day without any care for what he's saying. He's like someone permanently on a class A drug
