I guess. At least with hon degrees though it's usually demonstrated by proving their

abilities through actual life/work/business/charitable achievements etc. rather than having to go study the theory of it.

I suppose the closest thing we have in the UK is Loughborough Uni but at least the grads do sports related (and other) degrees there based on merit (I think).

In the US, the american footballers are only really taken on because of their sporting abilities.
