If you can do 5k you can do 10k

And if you can do 10k you can do a half. Full maras are more difficult than "two halves" and it doesn't necessarily follow that if you can do a half you can do a full one. But if you're in shape to do 5k, run three miles this sunday, four miles next sunday, five the sunday after, step back to three the week after that. Then go 4-5-6-4 the month after that. Run two or three other times in the week. Don't run fast and don't worry if you need to walk from time to time on the long runs. You'll be surprised how fast your body adapts.
