I love a drop of wine and fancy myself a bit as able to choose a decent bottle, most of the time. Mate of mine is serious about it, one level down from Master of Wine (only 130 of them or so in the world). After much badgering he took me to one of his tasting things he goes to. First bottle up, the guy leading it says "...and the first thing you get on the palate is a distinct tang of ptarmigan..."

What I should have done was shut the f**k up and nod wisely, or if I really had to say anything at all, which clearly I didn't, something like "...seems a little closer to snipe to me...". Instead, after considering my opinion for several tenths of a second, I said "what the f**k's a ptarmigan?". Quite loudly. First wine of the night so I wasn't even pissed.

He hasn't taken me to any more of his posh tasting thingies.
