I think it's defnitely a factor with overseas players

if Michael Laudrup or Ronald Koeman are interested in you, you will probably be more open to meeting them than if some angry, unknown Scottish guy is interested.

Also, due to his age and modest playing career, he presumably has very few contacts at the higher levels of the game.
