There was always a transfer deadline as I recall
It's the closure between the end of August and start of January which was introduced ten or so years back. I think it was intended to level the playing field and avoid off the field distractions carrying on into the season, but with all the money in the game now it's impossible to avoid them even with the transfer window closed.
