People hear what confirms their existing beliefs. This was beautifully illustrated by an excellent Radio 4 programme during the election run-up - I think it was Feedback. They played endless recordings of listeners phoning in to complain about BBC political coverage - furiously complaining that it was biased against Labour, or equally furiously complaining that it was biased against the Conservatives. It was fascinating.
