My dad was in the RAF and said they frequently did this in 80s

They used to skirt over the top of Norway, briefly dip into our airspace up over Scotland / North East, they would then have to scramble the fighter jets from Lincolnshire, Scotland knowing that by the time they got there, the Soviet bombers would have moved back out into international airspace.

Basically just testing our response / being a pain in the arse.
