Neil identified as a potential replacement in case they had to make a deicsion they didn't want to make.

Remember this was Adams Job and income so like any reasonable employer the club will have wanted to give him every opportunity to succeed.
This includes letting him fill the vacancy for a coach after Robson left.

However, as a business, they also started to plan for worst case to ensure a smooth transition.

I'd say they covered all bases here perfectly.
