The beauty of generic search results is if you are in the first page your marketing is free... though there is an argument for continuing your SEO plan to maintain that position.
It's not really rocket science though - I taught myself and my main website is on page one, world wide, for around 600 business related search terms.
The problem with the industry as a whole is in many cases websites are built with little or more often no thought for the SEO which means there is this after build SEO market. When I build sites (I only build for friends or friends of friends) the site is built very much with SEO in mind. Which means there is usually little after build SEO required.
