"not caring about the charts"

is easy to say when you are already multi-millionaires. Easy to make "less commercial" stuff (like Zooropa, or some of Radiohead's recent stuff) when you are already a massive supergroup and know you can shift bucketloads of whatever you put out. It woiuld be brave if they did it while trying to make a name for themselves. And U2 have long been very commercial, aimed squarely at the US-market, the world's biggest. Doing the Superbowl halftime show??? All bands would love you to think they "don't care about the charts" (cool image and all that) but I bet they do! Its big business.
