They were possibly off their faces when they broke in.

It does like it may have been opportunists or possibly it could have been connected to the work you're having done.

Kids can get affected by this really badly, so hope they're ok.

Definitely review your security. Windows, locks, doors, alarm, security lighting. Identify the most vulnerable points of your property as if you were a burglar.

No idea if you have one, or whether your situation would make it possible, but some people consider getting a dog under such circumstances. Can make the wife and kids feel safe and also gives the kids something to focus on.
